Think Wipeout is the daddy of hovercraft racing? Nintendo launched the original F-Zero on the SNES way back in 1990 and this follow-up on the N64 had everything going for it.
F-Zero X is all about boosting your way to the front of the grid with the 30 pilots all racing at one time, which is an impressive feature when compared to modern games such as Wipeout HD that only hosts seven other rivals.
Modes on offer are Grand Prix, Time Trial, Death Race and Vs. Battle modes. Grand Prix mode offers most of the meat with Novice, Normal and Hard offering players a tough challenge. The stages, though beautifully designed, will test your nerves as you progress through the game, where leaps of faith or a badly timed corkscrew can lead to your death and, unlike Wipeout, once you leave the track it is literally the end of the road.
If you're looking for an alternative, Nintendo-developed racing title, you'll be hard pressed to find anything more challenging... or more rewarding.
